WTI, crude oil stabilizes above $64, traders prepare for OPEC+ decision-making

West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) continued to trade in a narrow range on Wednesday, consolidating after a sharp sell-off caused by the Iran-Israel ceasefire, geopolitical risk premium fell, and traders readjust their positions before the upcoming meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+). Although the initial decline erased most of the gains caused by the conflict, the price has stabilized at over $64 a barrel.
Although the recent price trend is flat, WTI is slightly positive during the U.S. trading session, hovering around $64.50, close to the upper limit of the current range, and rising nearly 0.90% intraday.
While the market found temporary support around $64, momentum remained weak after the release of the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) report last week, which showed U.S. crude oil inventories fell by 3.5 million barrels, lower than expected, curbing tight supply expectations entering a summer peak demand period. The focus now turns to the upcoming EIA report late Wednesday, which could provide new clues about U.S. stock trends, and the highly anticipated OPEC+ meeting on July 6 that could determine the short-term direction of oil prices.
The data released by the American Petroleum Association (API) on Tuesday night also put pressure on prices, showing U.S. crude stocks unexpectedly increased by 680,000 barrels — during a period when inventory declines normally due to increased fuel demand in summer.
At the same time, all eyes are focused on the upcoming OPEC+ meeting, which is expected to announce production strategies for August. The organization plans to increase production by 411,000 barrels per day in August, reflecting the increase in production agreements reached in May, June and July. This will make OPEC+ in 202The total output increase in five years reached 1.78 million barrels per day, equivalent to more than 1.5% of global oil demand. The improvement is mainly due to the rebound in new orders and production, indicating that factory activity is recovering momentum and may boost oil demand from the world's second-largest crude oil importer.
However, weak labor market data in the United States suppressed optimism. The U.S. private sector unexpectedly reduced 33,000 jobs in June, marking the first monthly decline in more than a year, according to the ADP employment change report released Wednesday. This result was unexpected, as the market had originally expected an increase of about 95,000 positions.
Looking forward, the upcoming U.S. non-farm employment data (NFP) report on Thursday will be closely watched to confirm the overall slowdown in the labor market. Any unexpected downside in NFP could further curb crude oil demand outlook and spark speculation on the Fed's more dovish stance after ADP data is weak.
